Mobile ID

Mobile ID allows students living in Lakeside Village and University Village who forget their 'Cane Card to access their building, apartment, and room doors using their smartphones. Students are still expected to carry their 'Cane Cards and use them as the primary method of accessing all authorized spaces.

Remember, you may only use this feature on your own mobile device to provide yourself access to your room. You may not share passwords, PINS, or other confidential access information with anyone else.

Troubleshooting Tips

You must be within 5 feet of a door for the door to open. If you are not within that distance, you will see the error message “Error: Denied – Not within distance of reader”

Be sure you are connected to University of Miami wireless networks for best functionality

It is critical that you use your physical 'Cane Card to swipe into your room at least once every 5 days. In the unlikely event that we lose networking in a building, or if the door lock goes offline, this will enable a student to still be able to enter their room using their 'Cane Card.

If you have not used your physical 'Cane Card to enter your room in the last 2 weeks, you may not be able to use Mobile ID to open your room.

For safety reasons, if you should need to change the phone number associated with your Mobile ID app, there is a 3-day waiting period until your app will work with the new number.

Remember, this feature may ONLY be used on your own mobile device, for your own use. Your account and privileges may not be used by or shared with anyone else. Violations of this guideline will be referred to the Dean of Students Office.

If you are locked out of your room and cannot gain access, please visit or call the front desk for assistance.

If you are experiencing issues with gaining access to your assigned space using MobileID, try the following steps:

  • Ensure you are connected a University of Miami wireless network
    • If you came from another building or area with wireless connectivity, it may take a few moments for your device to recognize your new location
  • Check your device location settings and ensure they are enables for the MobileID application
  • Log out of the app and log back in using your CaneID and password

Contact Facilities Work Control if you continue experiencing difficulty using the Mobile ID application. Ensure to include all troubleshooting steps, pictures, and screen captures of issues so staff can best assist you.
