Fall 2020 Move-In Information

Below are specific details about what to expect when you arrive to campus during your move-in appointment time.

  • 1. Know your move-in time

    Your move-in appointment time was emailed to you earlier this summer and can be found in the Housing Portal via CaneLink. Please arrive as close to the start of your appointment time as possible. 

    Please note that the appointment time is only meant to indicate when you should arrive to campus for check-in. Students and families are not expected to complete the entire move-in process during only their appointment time, but you are encouraged to be as efficient as possible during the move-in process to limit your time in the building.

    Please remember to bring your 'Cane Card to campus. If you have lost your 'Cane Card, please get a new card by visiting the Parking and Transporation office located on the first floor of the McKnight Building (5807 Ponce De Leon Blvd) prior to checking into housing. 

  • 2. Arrive to campus

    Enter campus at Merrick Street. This will be the only entrance available.

    Once you have arrived on campus, follow signs and staff instructions to the temporary parking area outside the Watsco Center Fieldhouse.

  • 3. Check in for housing

    From the temporary parking lot, enter the Watsco Center Fieldhouse for our centralized check-in process. You can be accompanied by one family member inside the Fieldhouse. Per University guidelines, all students and family members will be required to wear face coverings and practice physical distancing.

    Once inside the Fieldhouse, you will:

    • Confirm your pre-arrival COVID-19 test and check into your on-campus housing assignment
    • Pick up your Safe Return to Campus Kit
    If you arrive to campus after your appointment time, please still go to the Watsco Center Fieldhouse to check in. However, this area will close at 8 p.m. If you arrive after this time, please check in at your residential area's front desk.

  • 4. Drive to your residential area

    Once you've completed your check-in, drive to your residential area to unload your car. Please limit your unloading to 20 minutes and then move your vehicle to one of the parking garages. If you are moving into Lakeside Village, you must park and unload from the parking garage.

    Members of UMPD and Parking and Transportation will be monitoring vehicular activity and encouraging safe, efficient, and timely unloading. 

  • 5. Your area's front desk

    Residents of Mahoney, Pearson, and Eaton: Stop by the front desk of your residential area to have your 'Cane Card programmed with access to your assigned space. The front desk can also answer any questions you may have and can provide a moving cart for you to rent while you move in. 

    Residents of Lakeside Village and University Village: your 'Cane Card will already be programmed so you are not required to visit your area's front desk. However, the front desk of your residential area can answer any questions you have and can provide a moving cart for you to rent while you move in. 

  • 6. Move into your room

    Students can be accompanied by up to two family members in your residential college to assist with unpacking and moving in. While there is no specific time limit for how long these guests can accompany their student, please be as efficient as possible during the move-in process to limit time in the building. Additionally, no overnight guests will be permitted. Students and family members must continue to wear face coverings and practice physical distancing while moving in.

Delayed Move-In Option

To allow resident students added flexibility in their arrival to campus, you may choose to move into your Fall 2020 housing assignment after our regular housing check-in period concludes on August 16.

If you would like to delay your move-in date to later in the semester, you must notify Housing and Residential Life by August 17 by completing the request formFull tuition, charges, and fees apply even if you ultimately choose not to move into your on-campus housing assignment at any point during the Fall semester.

Before fully committing to this option, please consult with your academic advisor to ensure you can attend your classes virtually for the start of the semester until you arrive on campus.

  • If you have already shipped items to our on-campus UPS Store, your items will be held until you return to campus. If you shipped items to campus using CollegeBoxes, your items will be placed in your room. Otherwise, if delaying your move-in, you should not ship anything to campus at this time.
  • If you have already requested remote learning but would instead like to delay your move-in, please complete the delayed move-in request form and contact remotelearning@miami.edu to cancel your remote learning request.

Pre-Arrival COVID-19 Testing Requirement

All resident students are required to test negative for COVID-19 prior to their arrival to campus. To assist resident students in accessing a COVID-19 test, the University is providing at-home test kits to resident students through our partner vendor, LabCorp. These tests are provided at no charge to students.

Students will receive an email with specific instructions to request their test kits from LabCorp and with more information about the process.

Residents Who Used a Vendor to Move Out in Spring 2020

Returning residents whose items were stored by one of our approved third-party vendors should arrange retrieval of their items directly with the vendor. If the vendor is willing, we can provide vendors access to drop items off to the resident’s fall 2020 room before your arrival. Once the student makes such arrangements, vendors will coordinate with us as necessary.


What to Bring

Help us maintain an efficient, safe, and physically distant move-in process this year by packing only the items most essential for your time on-campus. Packing only what you need also enables for a quick move-out process when it’s time to return home.

Mail and Packages

Resident students can ship items to campus ahead of their move-in date, and we are able to accept packages beginning August 3. Any packages received before August 3 will be rejected.

  • Residents of Eaton, Lakeside Village, Mahoney, and Pearson

    Mail and packages for these residents must be shipped to our new on-campus The UPS Store at Lakeside Village. Please use new and clean shipping boxes and clearly mark the number of boxes (ex. 1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc.)

    Resident mail and packages throughout the year will continue to be handled by The UPS Store, and the above address should be used for all mail and package deliveries to resident students. However, specific building addresses should be used for food deliveries.

    Package Pickup: 

    Students must call ahead to make arrangements with The UPS Store before picking up their packages. Staff will meet students in front of The UPS Store at Lakeside Village to distribute mail and packages.

  • Residents of University Village
